Gen. Kenneth L. Ross, the NGAUS treasurer, and three others were rescued Dec. 4 after successfully ditching their troubled single-engine aircraft in the Gulf of Mexico. Ross, a Louisiana Air National Guard fighter pilot, was the co-pilot of the Piper Malibu when it developed engine trouble on a flight from Cozumel, Mexico, to New Orleans. The pilot was Kelly McHugh. According to press reports, com-mercial airliners in the area relayed radio messages from the troubled aircraft to air traffic controllers. A Delta Air Lines pilot even diverted from his course to follow the small airplane as it descended. The aircraft splashed down in the gulf near an oil rig about 175 miles southeast of New Orleans. A boat from the oil rig picked up the four people, who had climbed into one of the aircraft’s inflatable rafts. A Coast Guard helicopter took them to shore where they were reported to be in good shape.
