NGAUS, Nevada Finalizing Plans for Reno Conference

Just about everything but the final business agenda is set for the 134th General Conference and Exhibition, Sept 9-12, in Reno, Nev.

Most sessions, meetings and the industry exhibitions will be held in the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, which is on the outskirts of Reno.

Attendees will stay downtown, about three miles away, at the Silver Legacy Resort Casino (the headquarters hotel), the Circus Circus Reno Hotel & Casino or the Eldorado Hotel Casino. Buses will shuttle conferees between the Tri-Properties, as they are known, and the convention center.

Business sessions begin at noon on Sept. 10 with the opening ceremony. While the business agenda normally doesn’t solidify until just before the conference, several prominent defense officials have accepted invitations to speak.

They include Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, the Army chief of staff ; Gen. Carter F. Ham, the commander of U.S. Africa Command; retired Gen. Ronald Fogleman, a former Air Force chief of staff ; and Gen. David M. Rodriguez, the commander of U.S. Army Forces Command.

Lt. Gen. Frank J. Grass, who the Senate confirmed last month to be the next chief of the National Guard Bureau, is expected to speak in what would be his first event outside Washington. D.C. as the Guard’s senior officer.

The Democratic and Republican presidential candidates typically address the conference during election years. NGAUS has invited President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, but word of their possible participation is not expected until later this month.

A full business agenda will be posted at www.ngausconference.com and www.ngaus.org.

The trade show will open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a. m., Sept. 10. More than 300 exhibitors had purchased booths as of the middle of last month.

The big social event will be the Governor’s Reception on Sept. 10 at the Reno Aces Ballpark downtown. The fare will include food and drink from several local restaurants, breweries and wineries.

—Staff report.
